SOUTH SHIELDS

Carling, G.M., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of Private 16/317 Gordon Morris Carling, serving with 5th platoon, 'B' Company, 16th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Born 24th June 1896. He was the son of Alexander Hamilton (a photographer) and Jennie Oliver Carling, of 12, Eastbourne Grove, South Shields.

The family had initially lived in South Shields, but then moved to Stockton-on-Tees, and Gordon went to Ayresome school, Middlesbrough. In 1901 he resided at 4 Hadrian Terrace (with Grandparents) leaving in July 1911, to be a clerk in a Shipping Office.

He worked at Newcastle in the Commercial Exchange building.

The family moved back to South Shields some time around 1910.

He was wounded on the 1st July 1916, but died of wounds later. His Company was in the 1st Wave. Aged 19.

He is remembered at Harton on H104.03, at South Shields S86.020, S86.046, at Newcastle on NUT043, NUT052 and in NUT068 page 112 and 156
