Collingwood, A.W., Pte., 1918
On Pozieres Memorial is the name of 376547 Private Alfred William Collingwood serving with the 11th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 24/03/1918.

Alfred William Collingwood was born on the 20th October 1895 at Darlington the son of William and Mary (nee Bland) Collingwood. In 1901 he was living with his grandparents (William Senior was a Police Sergeant) and two aunts at Cockerton. In 1911 the grandparents are no longer there and Alfred and his two aunts are at Auckland Road. When Alfred enlisted in 1914 he was at 30 Kitchener Street Darlington. By trade he was a Printer Apprentice Compositer working at the Northern Echo.

Alfred first joined the 5th D.L.I. with the service number 2521 but was later transferred to the 11th Battalion with a new service number. He landed in France 17th April 1915.

Alfred extensive war diary exists and he is also mentioned in 'In Their Own Names' page 167 a book by Martin Bashforth telling the story of the 11th Battalion Durham Light Infantry .

Alfred William Collingwood is remembered at Cockerton on C119.02, on the Northern Echo’s Roll of Honour, D40.37, D40,38 at Darlington D40.34 and in Darlington's Roll of Honour D40.67
