£110,000 including the obelisk.
Public subscription; carnivals; plus town workmen gave 3d per week from their pay packets; Red Cross Society gave £15,000. The committee purchased The Elms, a 17 acre estate off Hollyhurst Road for £30,000.
The economic downturn in the 1920s halted the fundraising, but was revived in 1924 with a week long railwaymen’s Carnival, which became a bi-annual fundraiser. Then the Rotary Club adopted the £12,000 children’s ward, with Rotarians building a house in Haughton le Skerne and then raffling it.

Hospital.
Entrance hall of administration building is lined with 11 marble wall-tablets.
Some are 120 inches high x 60 inches wide (3.04m x 152m) carrying the names in two columns.
These alternate with others 120 inches high x 36 inches wide (3.04m x 914mm) recording the names in a single column.
The lettering is in sans serif capitals.

1. Anyone wishing to visit the Memorial Hall is advised to contact Non-Clinical Risk Management Dept., Darlington Memorial Hospital beforehand.
2. In 1919 it was announced that the property known as “The Elms”, containing about 17 acres, had been secured, but it was understood that no building could proceed until financial arrangement had been secured.
3. At the same meeting, it was announced that a new X-ray machine and the cost of installing it had been presented to the hospital in memory of a fallen soldier but the name of the donor could not be revealed.
4. In 1923, the War Memorial Committee reported a fading lack of public interest for the project; many thought the hospital should be paid for out of the rates. The estimated cost of £80,000 which had been forecast had not been raised. Many firms were no longer interested in making payments, and there was little sympathy amongst the workers.
5. In 1923 it was decided to invest £14,000 of the £24,000 now in hand with the Corporation at 41%. The Rotary Club took on the job of trying to raise funds, not only for the new hospital but for the maintenance of the old one. “It was explained that the club hoped to raise £3,000 by this effort, which would be £2,000 above what is received at present, and they suggested that it should be divided equally between the building fund and the maintenance of the hospital. It was agreed that only one third should go for maintenance.”
6. A request from the Library that a script roll of honour drawn up by them should be put into permanent form was allowed to ride following annoyance that the Council were being asked for money for another scheme when they hadn’t raised the money for the main project.
7. The name of “Patrick McKay” should be “Patrick McVay”
8. The Foyer into the hospital is a Memorial to a Victoria Cross award recipient. See D40.60.
9. The townspeople of Darlington were presented with three options by the committee, including a garden suburb for war widows and a town hall with a memorial wing. However they chose to build a Memorial Hospital.
12. The first sod was turned by Lady Barnard in December 1925, and Lord Daryngton laid the foundation stone in June 1926. On the 11th November 1928, the obelisk was unveiled see D40.033.
13. Due to money shortages, the Memorial Hospital was not officially opened until the 5th May 1933, by Prince George, later the Duke of Kent. He then turned the key of the Bradford Memorial Porch, built in memory of Roland and George Bradford, the only brothers to have won the Victoria Cross in the war and whose family lived in nearby Milbank Road. He said “I am sure this hospital is a most fitting memorial to those who fell in the war, and its usefulness is , without doubt, far greater than a formal memorial of the usual type.”
