Routledge, W.C., Wireman 2nd Cl., 1916
On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of M/18678 Wireman 2nd Class William Carl Routledge, serving with the Royal Navy who died 31/05/1916.

Washington School’s Military History and European Culture Project has submitted the following:

WILLIAM CARL ROUTLEDGE – Royal Navy – 31.5.16

(sometimes Karl) was born to Robert and Margaret in Newcastle in 1897. By 1911 the family had moved to 14 Home View, Washington. He joined the Navy, became a wireman (electrician) and was serving on HMS Defence when it was sunk with all hands at Jutland on 31 May 1916. His name appears on Portsmouth Memorial. William was a member of the Westwood Club and his service was praised in the Holy Trinity magazine.

He is remembered in Washington on W96.01, W96.09 and W96.22 and on our List of Ships’ crews
