BARNARD CASTLE

Wearmouth, S.T., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France, is the name of 45509 Private Sidney Tarn Wearmouth serving with the 14th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 18/09/1916.

Sidney was born at Mickleton, Yorkshire in 1894 the son of George Tarn Wearmouth and his wife, Elizabeth Ann (nee Parkin). The couple went on to have 10 children but sadly 4 died. Sid’s siblings were Thomas, Margaret, Mabel, and Ethel. Two of the 4 children who died were Mary Annie, less than a year old and Minnie who died aged 11 days.

The 1901 census shows the family living at Mickleton along with a boarder who was a clergyman from Southampton.

Sidney went to the local Mickleton Church of England School from April 15th 1901.

In 1911 and now living at 31 Baliol Street Barnard Castle, life was much the same although Sidney was now working as a butcher. There also was an addition to the family namely a daughter, Marion, who was born in 1904.

He enlisted as service number 4398 at Bishop Auckland on February 14th 1916 however the number was later changed to 45509.

His military records show him to be 5’4”tall, with good eyesight although his physical development was considered to be only fair.

He was at home from his enlistment in February 1916 until 12th August 1916 when he was posted to France. After serving there for only 37 days he was killed in action on September 18th 1916. His total service amounted to only 37 days.
