Notes

1. “Dedication of the Memorial Organ. The church organ is a memorial to seventeen young men of the church who died in the First World War, and was installed in thanksgiving for their lives and that eighty eight other young men from the church had been spared to return home safely. The organ was opened and the memorial tablet unveiled on Good Friday, April 14, 1922.
Earlier in the week the Teesdale Mercury informed the public that the instrument had been built by Mr. James J. Binns of the Bramley organ Works, Leeds. Details were given about the organ pipes and functioning, and the article concluded, ‘This action is guaranteed to be absolutely prompt and reliable, and with a clear repetition. The organ case is of the finest, well-seasoned pitch pine, with front pipes of plain zinc’.
The Good Friday service for the dedication of the organ and the unveiling of the tablet (now in the church porch) was conducted by the Rev. H. Tregoning, with an address by the Rev. A.F. Guile, Chairman of the District.
It must have been a breath-catching moment for everyone entering the church to see ‘the commanding arch which has always been a feature of the church’s archtiecture now quite filled with a magnificent new organ’. Mrs. Hunton York unlocked the organ and removed the Union Jack from the tablet, saying she felt it a great honour to be asked to do so.
The Rev. H. Tregoning said ‘The organ in the this church is dedicated to the glory of God in sacred memory of the following who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War’, reciting then the names of the men who died. After silent prayers of thanksgiving and consecration were offered.
The Rev. A.E. Guile in his address urged that all should look to Christ and fight under His lead to destroy evil and make war a thing of the past. ‘Abide with me’ and the Hallelujah Chorus were sung.” Centenary History 1994.
