In Pelton Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 1642973 Gunner John Forster, serving with the Royal Artillery who died 31/01/1941.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
Our dear son John Forster
Died January 30th 1941 aged 30 years
Also his dear wife
Norah Josephine Forster
Died January 30th 1941 aged 30 years
Also their beloved son
George Clarkson Forster
Died January 30th 1941 aged 6 years

Loved and remembered

Newcastle Evening Chronicle 03/02/1941 reports:-

George Forster aged six, son of John Forster (30) and Norah Josephine Forster who were found dead at their home 15 Tuart Street, Chester-le-Street on Friday, as a result it is thought of gas poisoning, died at Newcastle Infirmary last night.

The inquest for all three victims was to be held at Chester-le-Street later today.

The father who was serving in the R.A. had been home on leave but should have rejoined his unit on Thursday.

When an entry was forced to the house, the police found the parents dead in bed with a gas tube close by.

Their son who was also lying on the bed was revived by artificial respiration and was taken to Newcastle Infirmary in a serious condition.

John, born 18th February 1910 was the son of George T. and Hannah Forster of 7 Peel's Houses Pelton.

John married Norah Josephine Smith in 1934 and their son was born 30th January 1935. In 1939 the family were living at 15, Tuart Street, Chester-le-Street and John was a Fish Frier.

John Forster is remembered at Chester-le-Street in C105.05 and on C105.40
