BISHOP AUCKLAND

Hutchinson, M.H., Pte., 1918
On the Ploegsteert Memorial is the name of 18/86 Private Matthew Henry Hutchinson, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 19/07/1918.

H.J.M. has submitted the following:

Matthew, the brother of Joseph Holroyd Hutchinson, was born on April 7th 1890 in Bishop Auckland. He was a joiner by trade and the 1911 census shows that he was single and living in Craddock Street with his parents. Matthew’s Service Record survives (unlike his brother’s) and it shows enlistment at the age of twenty four in 1914.

A stark casualty form states: embarked 6.12.15 (home); disembarked 22.12.15 (Egypt); embarked 6.3.15 (Egypt); disembarked 11.3.16 (France); killed in action 19th July 1918.

He is remembered in Bishop Auckland on B140.03, B140.12 page 12 and B140.24 and possibly as "W.H. Hutchinson" in the D.L.I. Book of Remembrance page 187
