Dedication, Creation or Publication date

a. Unveiled 13th September 1922 by Gen. Sir Ivor Maxse, dedicated by the Bishop of Durham, Dr. Hensley Henson.

Memorial Description

Monument, 17 feet (5.18m) high, comprising tall squared pedestal with pillars at each corner, surmounted by a dome with stumpy cross on top. The pedestal rests on a double step, the whole inside a low iron railing. The dedication is carried on the four main faces with addition information on the rise of the top step. Lettering is incised and gilded using sans serif capitals throughout.

The Auckland and County Chronicle 14/09/1922 describes it thus:
“The design may be divided into three features, the power portion resting upon a double landing of granite and strengthened at each angle with corbelled buttress, and panelled in between. The centre portion – which the mason calls the die – is a solid block of red granite for the title and lettering, supported at each corner by a polished column in grey, with moulded cap and base. The upper portion consist of heavy moulded cornice with ramped pediment on four faces, having four terminals – a continuation of the columns below – which also supports a columnar base surmounted by a dome and foliated cross.
The memorial itself stands 17ft high, and is set upon three steps of blue Hornton, a very hard and close-grained stone, variegated in shaded of blue and brown, bringing up the total height to 19ft.”

Materials used

Polished grey Glencoe granite with red Peterhead granite panels, set on three steps of blue Honiton stone.

Notes

1. The move from the original site was due to the development of the land around the station area.

2. Proposals to restore the memorial made known in 2006

3. General Maxse commanded the 18th Division in France, which was awarded the most VCs during the war.

4. The names of the fallen, which do not appear on this memorial, were to be placed on a proposed brass plaque in the Town Hall. But see names list below.

5. Field Marshall Maxse was to be asked to perform the unveiling, with Lord French to be called on if Earl Haig was unable.

6. Auckland Chronicle of 05/02/1920 reports a fund raising concert at Witton Park at which a tirade about the “Rip Van Winkle” mentality of the committee to raise the funds was launched.

7. Four local printers each promised printing to the value of £10 and a confectioner promised to supply refreshments for a whist drive and dance. A supply of mineral water “was given gratuitously for the dance last Saturday”; the Star Cycling Club intended to devote the proceeds of a sport day in August to the fund.

8. Two thousand souvenir programmes were printed by Messrs. G.W. Rudd, Ltd. and included a photo of the memorial. Messrs. Rudd have made this another of the numerous contributions to charitable objects.”
