On the Loos Memorial is the name of 10299 Private Thomas Ellwood, serving with the 7th (Service) Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment who died 18/03/1916.

Thomas Ellwood was born 1st May 1882, at Sedgefield, Durham, the son of (the late) John Ellwood and his wife Mary, daughter of Edward Wilcock.

Thomas was educated at Bishop Middleham and was a Stone Mason working at No 2 Pit, Thornley Colliery Durham. He resided at 3, Margaret Street, Ludworth.

He married at Houghton-le-Spring Alice Annie, daughter of (the late) Thomas Wilkinson Mallam. Thomas and Alice had eight children, Frederick born 15th September 1901, Thomas Alan born 28th February 1902, Leonard born 13th February 1903, Harry born 8th April 1906, Roger, born 17th September 1907, Charles Herbert, born 25th June 1910, James Kitchener born 16th January 1916, and Ruth Annie born 6th May 1914.

He enlisted in Sunderland in November 1914, and served with the Expeditionary Force in France, from the 4th October 1915.

Thomas was killed by a rifle grenade on Friday, 17th March 1916 near to Vermelles.
