Sgt. Stainthorpe was killed when Avro Lancaster II HK688 AP-W of 186 Squadron was lost on a mission to Dortmund. The Lancaster crashed near Castrop, with the loss of all seven crew members.Royal Air Force Bomber Command Losses of the Second World War: 1945; W.R. Also lost aboard HK688 were Sgt. G.E. Lowndes and F/Officer John Ross
