Tyne Cot Memorial

On Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of 205171 Private Richard George I'Anson serving with the 1/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 26/10/1917.

Pauline Priano has submitted the following: -

Robert George I’Anson (Ianson) was born 1891 in Middleton Tyas, the youngest son and one of 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl, born to Robert I’Anson 1853 of Middleton Tyas, Yorkshire and Helen Noble born 1846 in Aberdeen. Robert and Helen were married in Middleton Tyas September 26th 1878. He was a farm labourer and the family lived with his father, a retired butcher, and mother. By the age of 20 Robert George had left home and was working as a horseman on a farm, living as a boarder with the Pickering family at North Cowton, Darlington. At some point in time between 1911 and 1915 he moved to the Chilton/Ferryhill area and was employed at Windlestone Colliery. In 1915 he married Eleanor M. Groom in Middlesbrough.

Not long after his marriage he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 205171 and was assigned to the 1/7th Battalion, part of the Northumberland Brigade, Northumbrian Division which upon their arrival in France became the 149th Brigade, 50th Division. The Division participated in the Second Battle of Ypres (1915), the Battles of the Somme (1916) and the Battles of Arras (1917). It was during the Third Battle of Ypres also known as the Battle of Passchendaele, July to November 1917, that Private 205171 Robert George I’Anson was killed in action October 26th 1917.

He has no known grave, his sacrifice is recorded at Tyne Cot Cemetery, West Vlaanderens, near Ypres, Belgium, panel 19 to 23 and 162. His awards would have included the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

His widow Eleanor was living at Maypole Cottages, Middleton Tyas, Yorkshire. I have not found any evidence of a child/children.

In God’s safe keeping. Rest In Peace.

Robert George I'Anson is remembered at Chilton on C107.04, C107.12 and C107.14 (Darlington D40.039)
