Scanlon, L., LAC., 1944
On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 1670043 Leading Aircraftman Laurence Scanlon, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 07/11/1944.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

L.A.C. Scanlon was killed when L.S.T. 420 (Landing Ship, Tank) was sunk off Ostend. It had left Dover with a party of men, trucks and supplies for R.A.F. units in Belgium. When it arrived off the Belgian coast, it encountered a severe storm and the captain decided to return to Dover. Soon after turning, it struck a mine off Ostend and sank. 14 Officers and 224 other ranks were killed, with only 31 survivors.

Amongst the others killed on L.S.T. 420 wereAC1 A.S. Alderson,Ft.Lt. G.J. Binks, Sgt. M. Sedgwick, LAC J.H. Shickle, LAC E.P. Spence and LAC P. Wardrobe

Laurence Scanlon is remembered in Byers Green on B157.01 and at Spennymoor on S131.02 and S131.04
