Memorial Description

Plaque, long, divided into seven vertical panels, with two horizontal panels at top and bottom. The dedication is carried in the top panel, and the details of the opening in the bottom. The names are carried in a single column in each of six panels, while the seventh one on the right bears the Spennymoor UDC badge. Lettering is hand painted using Roman capitals .

Roll of Honour This memorial erected by public subscription is dedicated to those servicemen and women, Merchant Navy / Seamen and members of the Air Raid Precautions and Nursing Services whose homes were in the / Spennymoor Urban District and who died in the service of their country during the war of 1939 – 1945 The room at the head of this staircase was officially opened by Fred Howells Esq., J.P.,Chairman of the / Spennymoor Urban District Council on 8 September 1961 and is henceforth to be known as the Memorial Room.

Notes

1. Benjamin H. Grayson has the date “31 December 1948” after his name, presumably he died as a result of wounds.

2. Likewise, Harry Robson has the date “7 May 1946”.
