Alderson, A.S., AC1., 1944
On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 1693774 Aircraftman First Class Aubrey Sydney Alderson, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 07/11/1944.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

AC1 Alderson served with the Base Signals and Radar Unit. He killed when L.S.T. 420 (Landing Ship, Tank) was sunk off Ostend. It had left Dover with a party of men, trucks and supplies for R.A.F. units in Belgium. When it arrived off the Belgian coast, it encountered a severe storm and the captain decided to return to Dover. Soon after turning, it struck a mine off Ostend and sank. 14 Officers and 224 other ranks were killed, with only 31 survivors.

Amongst the others killed on L.S.T. 420 were LAC Laurence Scanlon; Ft.Lt. G.J. Binks; Sgt. M. Sedgwick; LAC J.H. Shickle; LAC E.P. Spence; and LAC P. Wardrobe .

Aubrey Sidney Alderson is remembered in Shincliffe on S123.03
