Carr, G.T., 2nd Lieut., 1918

George Thompson Carr

On the Arras Flying Services Memorial is the name of Second Lieutenant George Thompson Carr, serving with the Royal Air Force who died 14/10/1918.

The photo shows him as a pupil in Class 3c at the Alderman Wood School.

George Thompson Carr was born in Stanley 27th December 1899 and was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. John Carr of Fell House. He attended Alderman Wood School under Mr. Hardy. He liked sports. He played the harmonium.

He joined the army in 1917 aged 17 years and 4 months and went to Hastings to join No.1 Squadron of the R.A.F. He was sent to Belgium and France. His squadron was based somewhere between Moorseale and Courtria in Belgium. On Oct.14th 1918 he wrote home saying that he had just come down from a severe tussle and was going up again in the afternoon. He was shot down.

George Thompson Carr is remembered at Stanley in S135.04, S135.19 and S135.22 and at Tanfield Lea on T63.04
