Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

Thomas Gladstone Hall, one of 9 children of whom only 8 survived, was the youngest of 3 sons and had 3 elder and 2 younger sisters. His father Robert Hall of Rowley near Consett, born 1853, had transferred to Muggleswick with his family by 1871, where at the age of 18 he was employed as a fireman (railway). Married in 1878, district of Lanchester, County Durham, to Elizabeth Ann Milburn, born at Black Hedley, Northumberland, where she was baptised October 30th 1859, they settled at Waskerley in the parish of Muggleswick. It was here their eldest son John Joseph Hall was born in 1879. Robert supported his family now working for the railway as an engine driver, to increment the family income they had taken in a boarder, railway guard, 22-year-old William Reed. Daughters Alice Edith, Jane and Annie were born 1882, 1883 and 1887 respectively, George William 1889, Thomas Gladstone 1892, Mary Robertina 1895 and lastly Beatrice Pretoria Milburn Hall in 1900. By 1901 John Joseph (22) had joined his father employed by the railway as a foreman, Alice Edith (19) worked as a post mistress, their younger siblings, with the exception of Beatrice, were scholars.

Ten years later, aged 19, Thomas was no longer living at home although he still resided at Waskerley and upon the outbreak of war enlisted at Darlington, assigned as Private 17222 Yorkshire Regiment and posted to the 11th (Reserve) Battalion. Unfortunately, no trace has been found of his military or pension record.

Private 17222 Thomas Gladstone Hall died aged 23 years and single, February 14th 1915, at the Red Cross Hospital, Darlington, County Durham, of disease and was interred in St. Mary’s churchyard, Muggleswick, County Durham.

His father Robert, received all monies due to him, he commissioned at a cost of 4 shillings 1 pence an additional inscription to be added to his son’s headstone, it reads, “In Loving Memory.”

In God’s safe keeping. Rest In Peace.

Thomas Gladstone Hall is remembered at Muggleswick on M48.02 and M48.03
