Flowers, J., Gnr., 1918
In Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 27647 Gunner John Flowers serving with the Royal Field Artillery who died 17/06/1918.

Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

John Flowers was born in Durham, date unknown, the son of Sarah Hannah Flowers. Unfortunately, this is all we know about his early life.

His full service record no longer exists as about 70% of WW1 service records were destroyed during the blitz of WW2. He enlisted in Chester-le-Street in 1914 and was assigned as Gunner 27647 John Flowers to the Royal Field Artillery and entered the theatre of war in France, May 11th 1915, served on the Western Front until being sent with the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force to the Asiatic theatre, the equivalent of modern day Iraq, June 1918, with the 1064th Battery, 226th Brigade.

Gunner 27647 John Flowers R.F.A was killed June 17th 1918 and is interred in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, grave III. F. 8.

Due to the current climate in the Waziriah area of Baghdad where the cemetery is located a two volume Roll of Honour listing all the casualties buried and commemorated in Iraq has been produced and are on display at the C. W. G. C’s Head Office in Maidenhead available for public view.

In God’s safe keeping. Rest In Peace.

John Flowers is remembered at Craghead on C120.01 and C120.04
