Memorial Description

Roll of Honour, illuminated “from ancient Church Missals” with small central picture at top which is a copy of Perugino’s ‘Crucifixion’. There is a coloured border with gilded edging. The names are listed in three columns.

Notes

1. The Roll had been “kept from the beginning of the war and had grown steadily longer. At first they thought it might be a small one; but new paper had to be obtained on which to inscribe new names. Thank God, the roll was over. It was lengthy".

2. St. Thomas' closed 1/05/1997 and was later converted for residential use.

Durham County Record Office has a typewritten list 5 inches wide x 1 foot high which contains names in two columns. This might well be the draft for the illuminated roll. Ref.EP/Cra 1/20
