In Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 17022 Corporal John Harold Heaviside serving with the 10th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 20/09/1915.

Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:

John Harold Heaviside born 1895 was the youngest child of William and Mary (nee Walker) Heaviside. William was a Schoolmaster and had been in various schools from the 1870s starting with Caistron near Rothbury, Hutton Rudby North Yorkshire, Muggleswick and Waskerly North West Durham.

In 1901 the family were living at Templetown Consett. William died in 1902, Mary died 1908 and it was left to Mary Jane (born 1871) to look after her brothers and sister.

In 1911 they were at 9 Harvey Street, Consett. John Harold, aged 16, was employed as a Winch Driver (engines) probably at Consett Iron Company.

John Harold joined the 10th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in 1914 and on the 21st of May 1915 went to France. He was promoted to Corporal and died on 20th September 1915.

He is buried at Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery side by side with two others from 10th Battalion: Joseph Rowlands (4/8784) and Albert Nelson Booth (25971).

He was related to John Albert Darnton who is also listed on the memorial.

Kate Smith has sent a photo of her husband's grandfather, Arthur Ernest Heaviside, (left) who also served, with his brother John Henry.

John Harold Heaviside is remembered at Consett on C101.01, C101.15 and C101.16 and in the D.L.I. Book of Remembrance page 254, where his initials are transposed.
