In Consett Blackhill Old Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Third Officer John Douglas Dale, serving with the Air Transport Auxiliary, who died 17/08/1944.

Son of James and Malinda Dale, of Blackhill.

The headstone reads:-

In affectionate remembrance of
our dear son
John Douglas Dale
Killed in Air Crash 17th August 1944
aged 23 years
Also Linder
who died 23rd September 1950
aged 62 years
Also James Dale
who died 15th November 1954
aged 63 years

Third Officer Dale, of 14 Ferry Pilots Pool, A.T.A., was killed when Airspeed Oxford PH235 crashed near Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, after hitting HT cables when it suffered engine failure.

James Douglas Dale is remembered at Aykley Heads on A41.02, in Durham on D47.150 in Blackhill on B145.06 and in Consett on C101.01 and C101.12
