Memorial Description

Roll of Honour on paper behind glass, 15 inches high x 10 inches wide (380 mm x 254 mm) in a plain wood frame. There is an elaborate border of gold leaves on a blue background. At centre top is a laurel wreath surmounted by a crown and lion. Within the wreath is a coat of arms. To the left of the wreath are aeroplanes, to the right are battleships. At centre bottom is a fan of flags with scenes of soldiers in battle on either side.
The main panel is in the centre, in an elaborately-shaped gold border. The names are listed in a single column. The lettering is hand-written using a variation of Gothic, Roman and sans serif in gold, red, with the names in black.
The names of those killed in action are marked with an asterisk.

Notes

1. The colour pictures around the border were painted in 1944, the names were completed in 1945-6.

2. Our transcript of this memorial is correct. However, Simon Glancey has pointed out some errors of dates.
C.R.R. Batchellor died in June 1941, not 1940.
G. Knox died in February 1943, not January 1941.
W.C. Beck died in May 1943, not January 1941.

3. Lieutenant J.L. Oliver was in the 1st Durham Light Infantry Battalion, when he was captured by the Germans at near Halfaya Pass. See additional Notes below.

Additional Notes

a. One of the men remembered on this Memorial was captured in the North African Campaign, and reported of what happened to the Evening Chronicle 18/06/1942. Lieutenant J.L Oliver was from South Shields and worked at South Shields Corporation. He was in the 1st Battalion Durham Light Infantry. See also R.C. Meikle.
