Memorial Description

Book of Remembrance 11 inches high x 9 inches wide bound in leather. There is a thin gold line around the edge on three sides. The flyleaf is highly illuminated using elaborate calligraphy. The names are handwritten in a single column on each page, those who served are in black, those who died in red. They are listed under the headings of Army, Navy and Merchant Service.
The 1939-45 names are preceded by another illuminated page. The names are also in a single column, but across the top and down the two sides is a coloured border and all capital letters are illuminated.

Union / Congregational Church / Sunderland / Herein are inscribed the names of / the men who went forth from this / Church / to take part in the Great War 1914-19 / Those whose names are written in red / returned not to us, but / “Their hope is full of immortality” . To all who served the gratitude of today / and of all tomorrow is a / sure possession.
b. Those who / served in the / Second World / War 1939-1945 /
The tumult and the shouting died / the captains and the kinds depart / Still stands thine ancient sacrifice / A humble and a contrite heart. / Lord God of Hosts be with us yet / Lest we forget, lest we forget/

1. “In a casket below the tablet (S140.088) an album is placed containing the names of all men who served in the war, as well as those who made the supreme sacrifice.” (1922)

2. The “Royalty church” was demolished in 1970s.
