Calvary with weeping Mary Magdalene kneeling at Jesus’ feet. Life sized figures of Mary, mother of Jesus, and St.John are placed to left and right respectively.
Beneath them is the text hand painted in Roman capitals.
There is a plaque 2 feet high x 6 feet wide set inside a very plain narrow wood frame. There is a single line border culminating in a square with a St.Cuthbert’s Cross set inside a circle in each corner. Lettering is painted in gilt with a black shadow using Roman capitals for the dedication, sans serif capitals for the names and Old English for the name of the parish and the letters “R.I.P.” at centre bottom. The names are in nine columns, the first eight being for 1914-18 and the right hand ninth column for 1939-45.

Notes

1. An older picture shows that the original plaque was of brass, which must have been replaced to accommodate the names from 1939-45. The dedication on the photo is incomplete, and reads “ …..of the men of St. Mary’s Parish who / …..Great War 1914-1918”. The names are in five columns using sans serif lettering.

2. “The plaque itself has been revised to include the Second World War fallen, whose names conveniently occupy a surprisingly large space which must have been purposely left for additions, originally”

3. The three figures were removed when the memorial was adapted for the addition of the names from 1939-45.

4. From the parish, about 800-900 joined the forces, of whom approx. 100 had died.
