29/06/1921 unveiled by Mrs George Bartram (as Mr W.N. Bartram was unavailable), dedicated by Rev. J. Miller Craig.

Memorial Description

Plaque 4 feet 6 inches high x 2 feet 6 inches wide, with a pointed top and moulded frame. At centre top is a gilded crown. Lettering is in gilded Roman capitals.

To the Glory of God
This tablet commemorates
St George’s Rest
which was open for all members
of his Majesty’s Forces
stationed in Sunderland and
District during the Great War
1914 - 1919.
Throughout this period
more than 1500 men used the
rest each week.
The privileges of the rest
were given free of charge
members of St George’s Church
and friends in the town having
subscribed the requisite funds
£3000.
Under the same auspices
at a cost of £1000,
a hut was given to the Y.M.C.A.
for the use of troops
in the north of France.

Notes

1. Mrs Bartram noted that St. George's Rest was the first to open in Sunderland and the last to Close after 5 years.

2. "During World War I Rev. Alex Wylie Blue was officiating chaplain to the forces; and St George’s became well-known as a popular centre and canteen for the troops. Mrs Bartram was awarded the O.B.E. for her services in organising this: the medal being placed under the Bartram memorial window in the Church." History of the Presbytery of Durham.
