Memorial Description

Plaque of popular design 2 feet high x 3 feet wide (608mm x 912mm)set in a wood frame 4 inches (102mm) wide. There is a patterned border of string design culminating in a roundel at each corner containing the cipher of King George. At centre top are two crossed union flags.
The names of those who died are carried in a bordered panel at the centre of the plaque. The names of those who served are in five columns divided by vertical lines.
Lettering is in black sans serif with some words in red.

Notes

1. See also S140.118. These three were all together at one time.

2. 141 men and 3 women from the Sunderland Postal District had served, plus 51 men from the Engineering Sept. 21 had fallen. 6 men were awarded commissions and 10 gained distinctions.

3. Lieut. J. Pearce had been awarded the Military Medal and the D.C.M.
