To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Sergeant Robert Elliott, 5th Northd. Fusiliers, who gave his life for his country 14 May 1915. This tablet was placed by the members of St. Mary’s choir. “I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy IV 7.

Notes

1. Sergt. Elliott was a well-known North Durham athlete.

2. The Church was made redundant in 1978. There were fires in 1979 and 1983. The building was restored in 1986 by the North East Civic Trust. It was converted for use as Phillips’ Auction House. Reopened as a Visitor Centre by Newcastle City Council in 2000. Now re-opened as Gateshead Heritage@ St.Mary’s.
