Memorial Description

Headstone commemorating the Trotter family.

At its foot is a small sloping plaque 16 inches [412mm] wide on a base 20 inches wide [516mm] x 15 inches [376mm] tall which rise to 11 inches [276mm] at its rear to make the slope. There is a single line border which follows the shape of the screws at each corner. The lettering is in Roman capitals.

The headstone reads:
Spes Fides Charitas
In
memory
of
George Trotter
of Gateshead
who died Decr. 4th 1781
aged 41 years.
Dorothy his widow died
June 27th 1818, aged 80 years.
Three of their children died
in infancy.
John William their son died
Feby. 18th 1850, aged 50 years.
He was a master and commander
in the Royal Navy; had seen much
service at sea and was master of
the Leviathan line of battle ships
in the very memorable Battle of
Trafalgar for which he was
honoured by his sovereign with a
war medal, his memory will
long be cherished by a numerous
circle of attached friends for his
many excellent qualities which
adorned his character.

The George Trotter Memorial
The headstone was removed from the grave in 1925
at the time of the building of the Tyne Bridge,
and was stood against a wall of St Mary’s Church
until 1976, at which time it was sited in its
present position by Gateshead Royal Naval Association.
Due to the efforts of the Royal Naval Association,
the Gateshead Sea Cadets, and with the help of
Phillips Auctioneers the plinth was added in
1992 and the completed work now stands as
a memorial to all men and women who have
served in the Royal Navy past and present

Notes

1. "Spes, fides et charitas" translates as "Hope, Faith and Charity (or Love)"

2. The Church was made redundant in 1978. There were fires in 1979 and 1983. The building was restored in 1986 by the North East Civic Trust. It was converted for use as Phillips’ Auction House. Reopened as a Visitor Centre by Newcastle City Council in 2000. Now Gateshead Heritage @ St. Mary
