Plaque 1914-18 Durham Road Primitive Methodist

GATESHEAD

Original Location

Primitive Methodist Church, Durham Road. On the left of the choir at east end of church.

Present Location

The plaque was recovered from the church after it was demolished in the 1960s. It was rededicated in St. Mark’s on August 27th 2000.

Unveiled 12th September 1920 by Lieut.Col. A. Henderson

Memorial Description

Plaque, mounted on a wooden base and surround with shallow domed top. There is a wide border of raised green ivy leaves.. At centre top of the main panel is a wreath containing a red cross. The dates “1914” and “1919” are on each side. The names are listed in two columns below the dedication. All lettering is in Roman capitals.

Brass in oak frame.

To the Glory of God and in memory of / the men of this church who gave their lives / for their Country in the Great War.

Present condition

In good condition but obviously out of sight.

Notes

1. Apart from the names and final quotation, this memorial is identical in form and pattern to that in St. Mark’s Methodist Church (See G39.55)
