Memorial Description

Original grave marker, with a shield at the crossing point which bears the names. The quotation is on both arms, the letters “R.I.P.” are on the upright shaft below the shields. The lettering is painted in black paint, using block capitals throughout.

The bottom of the upright has rotted. There is a split in the wood of the shield.

Notes

1. “This wooden cross was erected to mark the graves of those soldiers of 2 DLI who were killed in action during the attack on the German trench system - the Quadrilateral - near Ginchy, Battle of the Somme, 15-16 September 1916. Thirty four men were killed in the attack, though only twenty four names are recorded on this cross, with several mistakes of name, rank and number”. See transcript.

2. Most, if not all of these men are named on the memorial at Thiepval.

A notice which accompanies the exhibit states:
