Original Location

St. Nicholas Church, Market Place DH1 3NJ. On one side of the south door.

Present Location

The church has been re-ordered and the memorial is behind the altar.

Dedication, Creation or Publication date

14th May 1922 by Col. J.R. Ritson, dedicated by Rt. Rev. The Bishop of Jarrow.

Memorial Description

Plaque 6 feet 3 inches high x 3 feet wide of mottled fawn marble within a dark brown marble border of 24 blocks each of which is carved with an elaborate raised pattern of leaves and flowers. Flower shelf below. A floriate cross is incised at centre top between the dates.
The names are listed in two columns in gold-edged boxes. The prayer is at the foot of the plaque. All lettering is in Roman upper and lower case.
Names marked with an asterisk were members of the 1st Durham Boys’ Brigade.

Marble in alabaster frame.

1914 1918.
Be thou faithful unto death & / I will give thee a crown of life. /
These are the names of the / men belonging to this parish and / congregation who laid down / their lives in the Great War.
O God for England these strong / souls have passed. Grant we / may make her worthy of them at last.

Some of the paint is wearing off.

John Lowes and Son, Gilesgate. Designer - Mr. W.G. Foottit, a parishioner.

Notes

1. The photo shown in Memory Lane – Durham City shows some differences from the present plaque, indicating that some additions must have been made at a later date.
a. The name “Frederick King” now has the letters “M.M.” after it.
b. The name Andrew Norman Brown has had the initials “M.C.” added.
c. Another four names have also been added subsequently, those of:
Jos. Matthew Brook;
Rich. Robt. Ainsley,
Arthur Graham and
Jos. Dalton Bell.
