Memorial Description
Window on south side, 9½ inches high and 21½ inches wide. Inscription is to be found at the foot of the plain glass window, incised and painted black using italic letters.
“The small upper window of vesica shape with an angel figure celebrating escape of the church from serious damage by the unexploded bomb.”

a German aircraft entered the Church
but did not explode.

Notes
1. The bomb was dropped by a German pilot who decided to jettison his bombs. In 2004 he came back to Bolam to apologise.
2. The damage caused by the bomb exposed a "leper window" which had not been seen before.

Journal 13/07/2004 reports visit by German pilot to apologise.
Daily Telegraph 13/07/20004 also carries the same story with pictures.
North East Diary 1939-1945 Roy Ripley and Brian Pears. Incidents 30th April/1st May 1942 to 20th June 1942 includes a letter written by the Vicar’s wife to her son who was serving. According to her, the pilot who dropped the bomb was killed.
