Lieut. H.J. Middleton, R.N.
News of the death of Lieutenant Hugh Jeffery Middleton, R.N., second surviving son of Sir Arthur Middleton, of Belsay Castle, Northumberland, will be received with widespread regret. It is reported to have been result of an accident in connection with the preparation of the coast defence of Scotland, and on board a mine-sweeping trawler outside of Fraserburgh.

Lieutenant Middleton was born in 1879. He chose the sea as a profession, but retired from it a few years ago as a half-pay officer, and devoted himself to a large extent to the management of his father's large estates in Northumberland. Mr. Middleton married, in 1905, Mary Katharine, eldest daughter of the late Rear-Admiral Samuel Long, and had three sons and a daughter. He was commander of the Tyneside Naval Volunteers.

The Western Daily Press 18/09/1914 reports:
