Unveiled on the 27th January 1921.

Memorial Description

Mahogany wood Shield, 12 inches (304mm) high by 9 inches (226mm) wide with a decoration in half relief hallmarked silver. At centre is an angel with spread wings. Above her head is a wreath containing the initials “S.H.”. Above this is a ribbon bearing the words “Nil Desperandum”. Below her is a cartouche containing the dedication.
On each side is a panel containing the names in a single column on each.

Notes

1. Saltwell Harriers A.C. was founded on Wednesday 17 September 1890 at Thomson's Café, 25 High Street, Gateshead.
The decision to have a shield to honour the Saltwell lost warriors was made at a club committee meeting held on 11 November 1920.
The shield is displayed at every club A.G.M. at the start of the meeting when the names are read out followed by a minute's silence.
Plaque is in private hands except when it comes out at the AGM

2. The Shield was unveiled at the Committee Meeting, 27th January, 1921.

3. The mahogany shield was gifted to the Club by Mr J. Forster.
