The Book of Remembrance / of the men and women of / Stockton on Tees who fell in / The Second World War 1939-1945 Introduction Borough of / Stockton on Tees / Second World War / 1939-1945.
To you brave spirits, all of you, / men and women of Stockton-on-Tees / whose names are here recorded as having made / the supreme sacrifice; who gave all that you had, / even life itself, so that England should be saved / We commend your sense of duty, your high cour- / age and endurance, under conditions so grave, and / against a military attack massed so formidably / that, at times, failure threatened Britain’s existence. / But, along with millions of other Patriots, you / held firm. This roll of 300 honourable names of / Stockton-on-Tees, compiled as a profound ex- / pression of thanks and gratitude, is here set forth in / the most beautiful traditional manner of a work of / art for the benefit and emulation of a grateful posterity. / Even though we mourn your loss, the dominant / factors in our pride of you are the courage and steadfast- / ness as characterised throughout Britain, ranking / as one of our most precious social possessions. /
God be praised / that we had you.
