Notes

1. Mrs. Usher was to have unveiled the plaque but was unable to be present.

2. From the district over 300 men had gone to fight. This roll of honour contained the names of 168 men who had gone to serve, and another roll would be forthcoming.

3. Of the 168 named on this memorial, 27 had been killed.

4. Three men had received Military decorations:
Corpl. J. Barratt: Military Medal and Croix de Guerre;
Sergt. Lobbin: Military Medal.
Driver J. Wood: Military Medal.

5. The Shields Gazette 21/06/1932 carries the following:
"Neglected War Memorial.
Sir - Coming up Percy Street today, I was shocked and pained at the sight of the Roll of Honour which is made fast to the wall there.
Surely the people of Percy Street have not so quickly forgotten the memory of those whose names are on that Roll.
If they cannot afford to keep it clean and tidy, then I think the best thing to do with it would be to destroy it altogether instead of leaving it in such a state of filth and neglect.
Those who fell gave their all. Is it too much for the living to keep the Roll of Honour at least clean?
(Signed) Vimy Ridge.
