Notes

1. “The Chairman said between 400 and 500 men had gone from that district into the various branches of the services and at some future date he hoped the shrine would contain the names of the whole of them”.

2. Mike Mulhern writes: "In 1930 there was a lot of unrest in the Tyne because of the cheaper labour rates which Arab seamen accepted thus preventing locals from getting seagoing jobs. This anger is reflected in this letter."
The letter appeared in the Shields Gazette in response to another from somebody calling themselves “Justice”, which reads:
Roll of Honour in Holborn.
Sir, answer to “Justice’s” letter, let me inform her that, to the best of my knowledge, the Arabs contributed nothing towards the Holborn Roll of Honour, as every person whose name is attached were asked to pay for their own inscription, which was paid for by the parents or wives of those whose names are on the Roll, and the brunt of the expense fell on our present Councillor, T. Lamb. As to the floral tributes each year, the widow of whom “Justice” speaks has no right to visit any Arabs for such decorations as every white man’s house in Holborn district is visited for a collection for that purpose, besides special tributes given by those people who can most afford it.
As to the cleanliness of the said Roll, I think the only time “Justice” or the widow cleaned it was on November 11th gone, and by doing so reaping all the honour of keeping it clean. All other times the Mill Dam “locals” would be asked to clean it, and never has this job been refused by any of them.
The lads whose names are on this roll are quite willing to look after it in future, or it can be left in the care of the Mill Dam Sports Club, of whom all these lads are members. Yours, etc.
