Ownership and maintenance

Formerly Brunswick and Wilson Street Memorial Veterans Club; now South Tyneside Council

Notes

1. The original Veterans club had a special Medal showcase which was mounted outside the entrance of the club. It contained Medals, one of which was from an American Civil War veteran, Francis Ryan from the U.S. Navy, who was buried with full military honours in 1909.
Also, there was a Medal for a Coldstream Guardsman, Sergeant John Burgess, who survived the four campaigns of the Crimean War. He died in 1908.
Other names have yet to be identified.

2. When Brunswick Street was demolished, the plaque was salvaged by the Veterans Club, Frederick Street. When that club closed, the plaque was taken for safe keeping by the Royal British Legion at 9 Queen Street, NE33 1HL, NZ 360660
The mayor’s chauffeur, J. Wood, carried it there in his car. (Oral Interview 9th November 2011).

3. It has finally come to rest in the Town Hall at South Shields, NZ 669366, where it was rededicated on 9th November 2011.

4. The Deputy Lieut., David Chapman, who unveiled the plaque in the 2011 ceremony, is the grandson of Lt. Col. Robert Chapman, who unveiled it at the original dedication in 1919.

5. The original Veterans' Club was formed in Cregg's Cafe in Brunswick Street before the turn of the century.

6. At the original dedication a floral wreath was laid on the Memorial by a little girl with the surname Kane, who had been orphaned by the War. She was the daughter of Private Thomas Kane, who is named on the memorial.

7. Veterans club (2nd location of the War Memorial) see note 1 above.
