Memorial Description
Street shrine. “Beautiful oaken tablet, picked out in gold, and bears the inscription, “Faithful Unto Death.” It is surmounted by some striking Gothic carving, which gives the shrine an artistic and finished appearance”.
A newspaper photo shows that it had a pedimented top surmounted by a cross raised on a shield. The names appear to have been listed in eight columns.

Notes
1. This is reported in 1919 to be "the largest of the many that have been erected in South Shields"

3. “The Mayor said he would like to emphasise the fact that, in proportion to its size, South Shields held the premier position amongst Northern towns for the number of men it had sent to the Forces. Wherever they had gone they had brought credit to their native town”.
4. Present at the unveiling was Private H.H. Robson, V.C. of the Royal Scots (Lothians), a South Shields man. (One report says “N.N. Robson)
5. “A pleasing but touching incident was the placing of three beautiful wreaths on the shrine by two little girls – Violet Turnbull and Margaret Tyrell. Both children have sustained heavy family losses through the war – Violet Turnbull losing her grandfather, father and cousin; and Margaret Tyrell her father and two brothers.”
6. In 1926 there was a proposal to clean and repair the memorial, with the hope that everybody would show the same loyal support as they showed in 1919.
