Notes

1. “A war shrine has been unveiled in Dale Street, South Shields, containing the names of 196 men who have served in the forces. Forty-four have been killed.” These numbers do not tally with the lists given.

2. On Armistice Day 1922 a special effort was made for the ceremony. It was “surmounted by two magnificent laurel wreaths.
The two side vases were filled with beautiful flowers, the glass front was covered by a Union Jack, and, on the signal for the two minutes’ silence . . . the flag was slowly raised to the top, disclosing to view the inside of the shrine, tastefully decorated with black and royal purple silk dotted with Belgian poppies.”

North Mail 30/07/1919 reports briefly on unveiling.

Shields Daily Gazette 29/07/1919 reports unveiling; 13/11/1922 reports ceremony in Note 2 above.
