Chapman, W., L/Cpl., 1917
In Wancourt British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 251047 Lance Corporal William Chapman, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 09/07/1917.

The Teesdale Mercury 10/07/1918 carries two "In Memoriam" notices:

Chapman – In loving memory of Lance-Corporal William Chapman, 1-6th Durham Light Infantry, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Chapman, Bridgegate, Barnard Castle, who was killed in France July 9th 1917. Ever remembered by his father, mother, sisters and brother. "Father, in Thy gracious keeping, Leave we now our loved one sleeping."

Chapman: In loving remembrance of Lance-Corporal Wm. Chapman, of the 6th Durham Light Infantry, of Low Startforth, Barnard Castle, who was killed in action in France on July 9th 1917. Ever remembered by his loving wife and little son. "Thy purpose Lord we cannot see, But all is well that is done by Thee."

His brother Thomas also died during WW1.
