Bailey, R.C., Pte., 1916
In Startforth (Holy Trinity) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave of PS/8784 Private Robert Cecil Bailey, serving with the Royal Fusiliers who died 02/02/1916.

His Military Funeral was reported in the Teesdale Mercury 09/02/1916.

He was the only son of of "the esteemed schoolmaster and Mrs. R.J. Bailey of Pool Ratch". He won a St.John's Scholarship and attended the North Eastern County School for four years. He then had a year's training with Mr. Lodge, Solicitor at Sedgefield and later started work with Lloyds Bank Durham Branch.
