In Strand Military Cemetery, Ploegsteert Wood, Hainaut, near Ypres, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of Gunner Joseph Warriner serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery who died 24/06/1917.

Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

Joseph, born 1893 at Newton Morrel, Yorkshire, was the illegitimate son of Annie Warriner born 1875 at Thirsk, Yorkshire, the eldest daughter of William Warriner of Skelton and Hannah Sherburn of Fulford, both near York, Yorkshire, born 1848 and 1852 respectively and married in 1870 at Richmond.

Annie Warriner married at Richmond, in 1894 John Dodsworth of Eppleby born 1869, a limestone quarryman. They lived at Eppleby and had 7 children together, 4 sons and 3 daughters. When John died in 1909, aged 40 years, Joseph and his half-sister Mary Dodsworth went to live at Chapel Cottages, Consett, with their widowed grandfather William (63). Both William and Joseph (17) were employed as farm labourers. Joseph’s mother had remained at Eppleby, her only means of support was son James William (13) who, when he was not at school, was employed as a news boy. Daughter Lilly (11) also attended school; Harry (9), Amy (5), Wilfred (2), John (1) remained at home. Annie had also taken into her home her newly married sister Ada Bell nee Warriner and her 5-month old niece, Margaret. Annie married during the 4th quarter (Oct/Nov/Dec) 1911 Walter Slee with whom she had a further 2 children, Albert born 1912 and Marjorie in 1919.

Within days of war being declared with Germany Joseph enlisted at Darlington, August 11th 1914, assigned to the Royal Garrison Artillery as Gunner 46271. Posted to the 46th Division of the Territorial Force, the units of the Division concentrated near Luton by mid-month and an advanced party landed at Boulogne February 23rd 1915 for service in Belgium. Joseph departed as part of the British Expeditionary Force August 17th 1915, upon his arrival engaging the enemy during the attack at Hohenzollern Redoubt. December 23rd the 43rd Division was ordered to Egypt. However, only a few days after their arrival during January 1916 the order was reversed and they returned to France where Joseph was given 7 days leave February 19th-26th 1916.

The 43rd Division remained on the Western Front for the duration of the war, July 1st 1916 they participated in a diversionary attack at Gommecourt. September 3rd 1916 Joseph was wounded in the abdomen and taken to the 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital at Doullens where the decision was made to have him evacuated back to England aboard H.M.H.S. Jan Breydel. Fully recovered he was drafted back to France, March 2nd 1917, posted to the 3rd Army Pool by the 5th and joined the 227th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery in the field on the 17th.

He was wounded May 19th by shell fire remaining on duty until he fell ill June 1st and did not return to duty until June 16th. Only a few days later, June 23rd, he was more seriously wounded and whilst in the care of the 2nd New Zealand Field Ambulance he died June 24th 1917. Joseph was interred at Strand Military Cemetery. He was 24 years old and single.

His grandfather William Warriner of Donley Ford, Lanchester, received all monies due to him, his awards of the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal and also personal items including, razor, scissors, mirror, disc, letter, 2 photos, 2 cards, coin (5 centimes), 3 titles, 2 badges.

Joseph’s step-father Walter Slee also served during WW1 1914-1917 with the Royal Field Artillery, service number 20439. He survived the conflict and died aged 47 years in 1926, death registered in the district of Darlington.

Joseph’s grandfather William Warriner died at Lanchester in 1927 aged 79 years registered in error as 69 years of age, his mother Annie Slee-Dodsworth nee Warriner died aged 74 years in 1949 registered in the district of Darlington.
