Mavin, C., L/Smn., 1917
On the Arras Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/2778 Leading Seaman Cuthbert Mavin, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 19/07/1917.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Cuthbert was born on 28th July 1892. He was working as a miner living with his father, John at 12, Middle Row, Pegswood Colliery when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 26th December 1914.

He joined the Howe Battalion on 10th February 1915 and was hospitalised with a bayonet wound to the left hand.

After rejoining the Howe Battalion Cuthbert was hospitalised again on 5th August 1915, this time with Dysentery, and rejoined the Howe Battalion on 9th November 1915.

He was posted to Divisional HQ on 2nd June 1916 for duty with the Military Field Police and then returned to the Howe Battalion on 1st December 1916.

Cuthbert was posted as killed in action by enemy shellfire in France on 19th July 1917.

Colin McMillan has submitted the following:

Cuthbert James Mavin was born on 28th July 1892 to John Mavin and Jane Mavin, at Longhorsley. In 1901 John was a 51 year old coal miner hewer and his oldest sons also worked in the mines. 18 year old Robert A Mavin was a putter and 14 year old George A Mavin was a colliery labourer. 12 year old Matthew was still at school. With the exception of Cuthbert all members of the family were born in Widdrington.

Ten years later, at the time of the 1911census, John, now a colliery deputy overman was a widower and the oldest sons had left home. Matthew was working as a miner hewer and Cuthbert, now 18, was a hauling engineman below ground. The family now had a servant, 44 year old Elizabeth Murray who was described as single, but her 10 year old daughter Margaret Isabella was also living there. Elizabeth was born in Howick and her daughter in Pegswood. Their address was given as 288 Welbeck Terrace, Pegswood Colliery.

Cuthbert enlisted in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in the Howe Battalion of the Royal Naval Division at Tyneside and was given the service number Z/2778. It is thought that he was not married as it was his father, presumably the next of kin, who was informed of his death on 19th July 1917 when he was an Acting Leading Seaman.

Cuthbert Mavin is remembered in Cresswell on C64.01 and in Morpeth on M17.17 and M17.31
