Bill Riccalton has supplied the following:

James Thomas P Storey, whose gravestone is in the churchyard, died of natural causes. His niece, who still lives at Southward Edge, Longhorsley, told me he had appendicitis and because he had influenza at the same time they could not operate to remove his appendix, it burst and he died of peritonitis. The RAF records 1912-1939 Air 79/2671 record that Pte J.T.P. Storey joined the RAF on the 18/10/1918 and died in Blandford Military Hospital on the 28/10/1918. His death Certificate is recorded as Blandford Vol 5a Page 508.

Source: Freebmd.org.uk) It appears he served in the colours for just ten days

Colin McMillan has provided the following:

In 1901 James Thomas P Storey was 4 years old and the oldest son of 34 year old James Thornton Storey who was born in Elsdon and described as “small farmer” and “own account”, and 38 year old Eleanor Jane Storey who was born in Longhorsley. James’ siblings were 2 year old John Henry George Storey and 1 year old William Charles Storey. All the boys were also born in Longhorsley. Their address was given as High Southward Edge, Longhorsley.

In 1911 the family were still living at Southward Edge, Longhorsley. James Storey senior was now described as “general labourer” and the boys were all at school. The census document shows that the boys’ parents had been married 16 years and in that time had had four children, one of whom had died. When this happened is not revealed.

James Storey died at the Receiving Depot, Blandford, Royal Air Force on 28th October 1918.

James Thomas P Storey is remembered in Mitford on M12.01
