Simon Glancey has given the following:
Spitfire IIA P7902 was one of a formation of Spitfires which at 1500 was ‘bounced’ by a number of Hurricanes from 59 OTU. In the melee that followed P7902 collided with Hurricane I AG111, both crashing near Wooler, 23 miles NW of Eshott. The Spitfire pilot was buried on the 10th at East Chevington, 4 miles west of Eshott.
Sgt Hulton was aged 19.
AG111 crashed onto Horton Moor near Doddington, whilst P7902 crashed into a bog close to a dry stone wall at Doddington Hill.
The pilot of AG111 was Flt Sgt Henry Anselm de Freitas 1393818, aged 26. Both pilots were killed.
