Unveiled 28th March 2010 by Air Vice-Marshall A.F.C. Hunter, C.B.E., A.F.C., D.L. Lord Lieutenant.

Memorial Description

Memorial headstone with slightly curved top on broad base. At centre top is the RAF badge in full colour, with the dates “1939” and “1945” on each side. Lettering is incised and gilded using Roman capitals throughout.

of those of all nations
who laid down their lives
in the cause of
freedom whilst serving at
RAF Acklington during
the Second World War.

Notes

1. Air Vice-Marshall A.F.C. Hunter had trained at Acklington during the war.

2. Air Training Corps Cadets stood in front of each grave during the Roll Call, and placed a small cross on each grave as the name was called.

3. During the ceremony, a Rescue helicopter flew over trailing the RAF standard.

4. Wreaths were laid on behalf of various local organisations, but included services representatives from Canada and Holland, among others. A wreath was also laid as a peaceful gesture on behalf of the German forces.
