PIlot Officer Austin was a crew member of Whitley V Z6932 ZA- which was carrying out an air test. The aircraft landed at Acklington airfield after becoming lost in poor visibility. On leaving to return to Leeming, the Whitley flew into h/t cables, crashed and burst into flames. The rest of the crew were:

Sgt W Stuart RCAF – killed
P/O R S Austin – killed
Sgt P W Bryant – killed
Sgt Whitlock – injured
