MacGregor, K.W., A/Capt., 1945

In the Taukkyan War Cemetry is the Commonwealth War Grave of 193468 Captain Kenneth William MacGregor serving with the 27th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery who died 31/01/1945.

Kenneth was the son of William and Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, of Whitley Bay, Northumberland.

Kenneth MacGregor was a 2nd Lieutenant from the 21st June 1941, then Lieutenant on the 1st October 1942. He was acting Captain at the time of his death.

This unit went to France with the BEF in 1939 and was evacuated.

Circa 1942 it sailed to India. It was in either Bangalore or Secunderabad there for jungle training. Joined the 25th Indian Division and went into Burma, Arakan, circa March 1944. Was involved in the Tunnels battles near Maungdaw It remained in the Arakan, taking part in the advance down the Mayu peninsula, December 1944. Assaulting in 'Z' Lighters Myebon, Kangaw. and Ruy-wa. Withdrawn to Akyab in March 1945. Sent to Ramree Island in April to join 26th Indian Division for the capture by sea of Rangoon, where it became Garrison troops receiving returned FEPOWs and Officers returning to the UK on demobilisation. Subsequently to Central Burma and Hong Kong by 1947, where it was disbanded and became 25th Field Regiment RA.

'LOCAL OFFICER KILLED IN ACTION

Mrs. E. A. Macgregor, of 79 Grosvenor Drive, Whitley Bay, has received intimation that her son, Captain Kenneth W. Macgregor, R. A., has been killed in action in Burma.

Captain Macgregor was a former pupil of Dame Allen's School, Newcastle, and after serving 2 years as a junior architect in the Duke of Northumberland's Office, Newcastle, he entered King's College as an architectural student. He was a well-known member of the Panama Swimming Club, Whitley Bay.

Three years of Captain Macgregor's four-year years' service have been spent in India and Burma. He expected to return home this year when he would have been married to Miss M. Wallace, Chollerford Avenue, Whitley Bay.'
