Whitley and Monkseaton Urban District reported the death of Special Constable Charles Gilbert, civilian, who died 14/12/1942.

In Whitley Bay (Hartley South) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In memory of my dear husband
Charles Gilbert
Killed by enemy action
14 Dec. 1942 aged 41 years.
